Fun sample to look at. First you see nothing along the surface, then with time the ice sublimates and makes everything obvious.

The perchlorate is dense to begin with and then develops a microporous appearance with time (and sublimation) in the SEM.

You can see in the 1st photo that the perchlorate (raised in relief, rimming the ice grains) is dense.

In the other 2 photos, taken a bit later, it appears porous.

In the middle photo you can also see a piece of perchlorate where an ice grain has been plucked away (upper left quadrant of middle photo).
